People often ask ‘What is Reiki?’. The word Reiki, pronounced Ray-key, means Universal Life Energy. It is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation. It also promotes natural healing. The technique was developed last century by a Japanese man, Dr Usui. Since then it has been passed down through the generations from teachers (masters). It supports the body’s natural ability to heal itself. As a result it has grown in popularity and can be used alongside traditional medical treatments. It is the perfect antidote to the stresses of daily life.
It is administered by gently placing hands on your body (non-intrusively) or a few inches above it. This channels the Reiki ‘Life force’ energy. A treatment feels like a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through and around you. Reiki treats the whole person including body, emotions, mind and spirit. It creates many beneficial effects that include relaxation and feelings of peace, security and well-being. It also works in conjunction with all other medical or therapeutic techniques to relieve side effects and promote recovery.
Reiki is based on the idea that an unseen ‘life force energy’ flows through the body. If a person’s life force energy is low, then they are more likely to get sick or feel stress. Alternatively, if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy.
Reiki heals by flowing through the affected parts of our energy field (chakras and aura). It charges them with positive energy. It raises the vibratory level of the energy field in and around the physical body where the negative thoughts and feelings are attached. The negative energy breaks away and the Reiki clears the energy pathways. Thus, the life force is allowed to flow in a healthy and natural way.
A common question is how a Reiki treatment is given. Reiki energy flows from the practitioner’s hands to the client. The client lies on a massage treatment table. It is OK to sit or stand if that is more comfortable.
The client remains fully clothed. Next, the practitioner places their hands on or near the client’s body in a series of hand positions. Hands are placed non-intrusively on the body. The focus is on positions around the head and shoulders, the stomach, and feet. If the client has specific areas of concern, additional focus is given to these areas. Hand positions are held for around three minutes. The whole treatment lasts about 45 minutes. For children and animals a shorter treatment is recommended.
Most people experience a deep sense of relaxation and come away feeling an overwhelming sense of well-being. During the treatment clients often report feelings of intense warmth or tingling. Clients often describe a reduction in pain and discomfort, and a general melting away of worries. A Reiki treatment feels like a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through and around you.
In a word, yes! The recent large scale research carried out by Harvard University has shown that with just one session of Reiki, statistically significant improvements were reported for pain, anxiety, depression, nausea and fatigue. Here is a link to the study:
So if one session can do all that, imagine what the possibilities are if you make Reiki a regular part of your toolkit of self-care?
I always encourage clients to book regular sessions if that is possible for them, be that weekly, fortnightly or once a month. A top-up of Reiki is a wonderful thing.
A 1 hour appointment costs £35. This includes a short consultation and a Reiki treatment which lasts around 45 minutes. Payment is by cash or bank transfer on the day please.
To get maximum ongoing benefits from Reiki a course of treatments is usually recommended. Blocks of 6 sessions can be booked in advance for the reduced rate of £180 (£30 per session).
Reiki is an ideal gentle treatment for children, who are often dealing with anxieties, fears and social pressures. Reiki automatically adjusts to what the child or baby needs.
Please note that an adult must be present for the treatment. A shorter treatment is usually preferable for a child. It can often be nice for a parent and child to share an appointment and have a mini treatment each.
Reiki energy can only do good and is a gentle and safe treatment in pregnancy. Additionally, many people have reported an improvement in their sleep after a treatment, which can be difficult in pregnancy.
Most of the time a person will feel relaxed and uplifted by a Reiki treatment. However, occasionally a person will have what is called a healing crisis. As a person’s vibration goes up, toxins that have been stored in the body will be released into the blood stream to be filtered by the liver and kidneys and removed from the system. When this happens, sometimes a person can get a headache, stomach ache, feel a little feverish or feel weak. If this happens, it is a good idea to drink more water, eat lighter meals and get more rest. The body is cleansing as part of the healing process so this is a good sign.
